4×5 Large Format: What the 35mm Photographer Should Know Before Taking the Plunge

Large format has long been the territory of purists and contemplative landscape photographers working behind a wooden tripod. But something has shifted in recent years: affordable field cameras have proliferated, online communities have demystified the process, and Kodak has just announced that large format films are now part of the new line it distributes directly. It's a good moment to talk about this seriously, without the usual romanticism.

This article is for photographers who are already shooting film in 35mm or 120, who know how to develop, and who are genuinely wondering whether large format is worth the investment in time and money.


What "large format" actually means

In film photography, large format refers to anything beyond 120: primarily 4×5 inches (roughly 10×12.5 cm) and 8×10 inches (roughly 20×25 cm). Unlike 35mm or 120, there's no roll. Each image is exposed on an individual sheet, loaded into a film holder, slid into the camera, and developed on its own in the dark.

A single 4×5 sheet is roughly 14 times the area of a standard 35mm frame. In 8×10, you're talking 56 times the area. That's not a subtle difference: the enlargements it supports, the tonal separation, the resolution of fine detail are in a different category altogether. But you pay for that at every step.


Three field cameras worth considering

The first obstacle most people imagine is the gear itself. The mental image of a large format camera tends to be a big bellows on a mahogany tripod in a Victorian studio. In practice, modern field cameras are light, fold flat, and fit in an ordinary backpack.

The Intrepid 4×5 MK4 is probably the best-known entry point right now. It's a thoroughly modern rethink of the traditional field camera, offering all the essential movements and a Graflok back. It sells for around $495 new. It's lightweight, built from polypropylene and wood, and the user community is active. The main complaint is mechanical slop, which you learn to work around fairly quickly.

The Chamonix is the step up. The Chamonix 45N-2 runs around $1,441 certified used. It's cherry wood and titanium, noticeably more rigid, with generous movements and a quality finish. For someone who already knows they're going to use large format seriously, it's a coherent investment. Several landscape photographers who start on an Intrepid end up moving to a Chamonix after a year or two.

The Toyo Field (models 45A, 45AII) is a Japanese alternative found mostly on the used market. Solid, precise, with a well-established field reputation. It's often the choice of photographers who'd rather have serious metal than wood or plastic. Good examples sell for between $500 and $900.

In any case, you'll need to budget separately for the lens (sold separately, typically mounted on a lensboard), film holders ($30 to $60 each new, $10 to $25 used), and a stable tripod. You can put together a working Intrepid kit with a decent used lens for under $1,000, or push well past $3,000 if you're going Chamonix new with quality glass.


Focusing on the ground glass: learning to see differently

This is often where people stumble first. With a large format camera, you're composing and focusing on a ground glass at the back of the camera, with the image upside down and reversed left to right. You cover your head with a dark cloth to block ambient light and actually see the glass. The first time you do it, it's disorienting. After a few hours of practice, it becomes a different way of reading an image: slower, more deliberate, with a very clear sense of what's sharp and what isn't.

You focus by moving the rear (or front) standard along the rail, then refine with a loupe. Depth of field in large format is very shallow for close subjects, but the camera movements, particularly front tilt, let you orient the plane of focus in ways that 35mm simply can't. Tilting the front standard angles the focal plane according to the Scheimpflug principle, which lets you, for example, render an entire diagonal foreground field sharp without stopping down to f/45.

One practical thing to know: once you've focused, you stop down the lens, cock the shutter (which lives in the lens, not the body), pull the film holder, slide out the dark slide, fire, slide the dark slide back in, and flip the holder to mark it as exposed. It's a ritual. Every step matters because every sheet costs money.


Development: three realistic approaches

Unlike 35mm where you process an entire roll at once, large format means handling individual sheets. There are a few ways to go about it.

Tray development is the oldest and most accessible method. You work in total darkness, stack the sheets in a tray of developer, and slip them from bottom to top at regular intervals. It works fine for small batches (four to six sheets at a time), requires almost no additional equipment, but takes some dexterity, and you'll scratch emulsion the first few times.

Development tubes (BTZS-style tubes, or DIY PVC tubes) let you process each sheet individually in a small volume of developer, then continue in normal light once the tubes are loaded in the dark. It's more economical on chemistry and gives you precise, repeatable agitation. A lot of large format photographers end up settling on this method.

The Jobo (rotary processor) is the most comfortable option for regular volumes, but also the most expensive. A used Jobo CPP-2 in good shape runs between $400 and $800. For someone developing color regularly or wanting tight temperature control, it pays for itself.

For developers, Kodak HC-110, Rodinal, and D-76 all work well in large format. Development times vary by method, but the manufacturer data sheets from Kodak and Ilford give solid starting points for each emulsion. There's no need to experiment blind; this is one of the most thoroughly documented topics in analog photography.


What Kodak just announced, and why it matters

Eastman Kodak has announced that large format films and bulk rolls are now part of the new line it distributes directly. The list includes Ektapan 100 and 400 in 4×5, and Ektacolor Pro 160 and 400 in 4×5 and 8×10. These newly distributed Eastman Kodak emulsions don't include Portra or T-Max, which remain handled separately for now.

This marks the end of Eastman Kodak's gradual move toward in-house distribution, roughly 14 years after that function was outsourced to Kodak Alaris following the manufacturer's 2012 bankruptcy protection filing. The change doesn't transform the emulsions themselves, but it signals that Kodak sees large format as a viable segment, not one it's winding down. On top of that, Ilford recently announced that Pan F Plus is now available in 4×5 and 8×10, which adds further depth to what's actually on the shelf.


The real cost per frame

This is the question most articles dance around, so here's an honest estimate.

A box of 25 sheets of T-Max 100 in 4×5 runs roughly $60 to $75 depending on the retailer, which works out to between $2.40 and $3.00 per sheet before development. Developing at home in trays or tubes adds maybe $0.30 to $0.50 per sheet in chemistry. You're looking at roughly $3 to $4 per image.

For comparison, a 36-exposure roll of T-Max 100 in 35mm costs around $12 to $15, and developed at home that's under $0.50 per frame. The gap is significant, and it fundamentally changes how you work.

In 8×10, the cost per sheet is higher still, often $7 to $12 depending on the emulsion and how many you're buying at once. You don't work the same way at all.

That's not necessarily a problem. Most photographers who shoot large format seriously make fewer images, but with considerably more preparation. An experienced shooter getting one keeper per two or three sheets exposed is not unusual. It enforces a discipline that 35mm doesn't impose in the same way.


What large format doesn't fix

There's a persistent idea that large format is inherently "better." It isn't. It's different. The shallow depth of field can be a liability in certain situations. The time between forming an intention and actually exposing a sheet is long, which makes it a poor fit for anything that moves. The fixed costs are real. And the learning curve around ground glass, film holders, movements, and sheet film development takes time.

For someone shooting street or fast portraiture, it's probably not the right tool. For architecture, careful landscape work, or studio portraiture where you have full control, the advantages are real and measurable.


Going further

If you want to try before committing: some studios and collectives lend or rent large format equipment. Borrowing a camera for a weekend with five or ten sheets of film is enough to know whether the process suits you.

For an entry-level camera, the Intrepid 4×5 MK4 is made by Intrepid Camera, a British company known for its handmade large format cameras, which has recently launched a new lens and electronic shutter system to make large format more accessible. For film stocks, Kodak T-Max 100 and Ilford HP5 Plus in 4×5 are both solid starting points in black and white. HP5 in particular is forgiving of overexposure and slightly imprecise development times, which is useful when you're still getting your process dialed in.
