Darkroom Without a Dedicated Space: How to Actually Print in an Apartment

For a lot of photographers, printing in the darkroom feels out of reach without a basement or a spare room. Which is a shame, because the real obstacle isn't space — it's organization. With a bit of method, an ordinary bathroom or even a corner of your living room can be up and running in twenty minutes, and packed away just as fast. Here's how to approach it in practice.


The Real Problem: Darkness, Not Square Footage

Before talking about equipment, it helps to understand what you're actually trying to control. Black-and-white photo paper is primarily sensitive to blue and green light, not to red or amber. A safelight can stay on throughout your entire session. What you need to block is white light coming into the workspace, not some cinematic pitch-blackness.

There's a simple, reliable test: go into the room you're considering, turn everything off, and wait ten minutes for your eyes to adjust. Then see whether you can make out your hand laid flat on the table. If you can't, the darkness is good enough to start. If you see light bleeding under the door or around a window, tape it off with black gaffer tape or hang a heavy blanket over it, then test again.


The Bathroom: The Classic Choice, and For Good Reason

This is where most people start when printing at home without a dedicated space, and it works well. The advantages are real: running water right there, you can drain your trays directly into the tub or sink, and bathrooms are usually the easiest rooms to black out (few windows, door gaps that are manageable).

The enlarger goes on the vanity or on a board laid across the bathtub. Not the most ergonomic working position, especially over a long session, but for an occasional evening of printing it's perfectly fine. Your processing trays — developer, stop bath, fixer — sit in the tub itself, and you can maintain a working temperature around 20°C (68°F) by adjusting the hot and cold mix from the tap.

One thing to watch: ventilation. Fixer off-gasses acetic acid, and a sealed bathroom gets uncomfortable fast. Crack something open between sessions, and if you're printing for hours, take a break every hour or so.


The Closet: An Underrated Option

A decent-sized closet, say 90 × 120 cm (roughly 3 × 4 feet) minimum, can become a near-permanent workstation without any permanent modifications. It's actually one of the more practical setups if you print regularly: leave the enlarger in place, open the door, switch on the safelight, and you're working.

The main constraint is height. An enlarger like the Ilford Multigrade 500 or a compact Durst, raised on its column, needs clearance. In a closet with a ceiling around 2 meters (6.5 feet) or lower, you may be limited to smaller print sizes — 5×7 or smaller from 35mm. Check the fully-extended column height before you buy anything.

Water is obviously not in the closet, so you end up working in two zones: dry side in the closet (enlarger, easel, timer, paper), wet side outside, in the bathroom or over the kitchen sink. The back-and-forth adds a step, but it's entirely manageable.


The Ilford Pop-Up Darkroom Tent: The Nomadic Solution

Printing in the Living Room: More Setup, More Space

Some photographers work right in their main room, in the middle of the night, after blacking out the windows. It's not a crazy idea if you live alone or can plan ahead. Heavy blackout curtains, foam tape along the bottom of the front door, and you work from midnight to 2 a.m. when the street outside is dark.

The enlarger goes on a stable table — and stable really matters here, because any vibration during exposure shows up on the print. Chemistry can go on a second table with a large basin underneath in case of spills, and a couple of buckets of warm water nearby to help hold temperature.

It's more work to set up than the bathroom option, but you have more room, and for apartments without a bathtub or with a tiny bathroom, it's sometimes the only viable path.


Choosing an Enlarger for This Kind of Setup

The enlarger question matters a lot, because not all of them suit a constrained or temporary workspace equally well.

Format first. If you're only printing 35mm, a compact enlarger like a Durst M305 or Meopta Axomat works on a small footprint and stores easily. If you're printing medium format — 6×6 or 6×7 — you need more column height to reach larger paper sizes, and the head is heavier.

The head. A multigrade head with built-in filtration means you're not fumbling with gelatin filters in the dark, which simplifies things considerably when you don't have a convenient spot to set small accessories down.

Weight and bulk. In a temporary setup where you're pulling the enlarger out and putting it away each session, weight matters. Some of the older all-metal enlargers are technically excellent but push 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 lbs), and just dealing with the storage becomes its own ordeal.

In practice, a 1980s-to-2000s enlarger from Durst, Meopta, or Ilford, in good mechanical shape, with a multigrade head, hits the best balance of capability and practicality for this kind of use. The used market is well-stocked, and solid machines show up regularly in the $100 to $300 range.


Organizing the Workflow Without a Permanent Space

Logistics is where temporary setups actually get difficult. With a permanent darkroom, you leave everything in place between sessions. When you're working temporarily, every session starts with setup and ends with teardown. A few things help reduce that friction:

  1. Keep a ready-to-go kit. One tray or bag with everything you need: timer, focusing loupe, easel blades, dodging and burning tools. You're not hunting for things when you should be printing.
  2. Mix chemistry in advance. Developer and fixer can go into opaque bottles hours before the session. No measuring and mixing in the dark.
  3. Work in batches. Rather than expose one sheet and develop it, then start again, expose several test strips and keep them in a light-tight box, then develop everything in one run. Cuts down the trips between dry side and wet side considerably.
  4. Keep a printing log. In a setup where you don't always have access to the enlarger when the mood strikes, writing down your settings — column height, aperture, exposure time, grade — means you can pick up exactly where you left off next session.
  5. Handle fixer waste properly. Fixer shouldn't go down the drain untreated; it contains silver salts. Keep a storage jug and take it to a disposal point, or use neutralizing tablets if that's what's available locally.

What Doesn't Work Well

It's worth being honest about the limits. A temporary setup gets tiring if you're printing frequently. Twenty minutes to set up is twenty minutes you're not printing. Once you're doing more than one session a week, the temptation to find a proper space gets real, and that's usually when people start sharing a community darkroom or calling a friend with a basement.

Ventilation is the constraint people most consistently underestimate. Chemical fumes in a closed space are unpleasant and, over a long session, genuinely not great for you. If the space can't be ventilated without letting in light, work in short stretches.

And temperature stability. In winter in a poorly insulated apartment, keeping your trays at 20°C (68°F) on a cold tile floor may mean a thermometer and frequent top-ups of warm water. Summer is the opposite problem. Neither is insurmountable, but both require attention.
