Expired Color Film: Understanding Age, Compensating Exposure, and Working With the Drift
The date printed on the box isn't a death sentence. It's a manufacturer's promise: up to that date, under reasonable storage conditions, the film will perform according to its specs. After that, things get more complicated. Not necessarily in a bad way.
The secondhand market has been flooded with expired film stocks for a few years now, often at prices tempting enough to make you want to experiment. But "expired" covers a wide range of realities. A Kodak Gold three years past its date, kept in the fridge, and a Fuji Superia forgotten for ten years in a kitchen drawer age in completely different ways. Understanding what's actually happening chemically in the emulsion, and what to do about it, makes a real difference in your results.
What Happens Inside the Emulsion Over Time
A C-41 color film is made up of three superimposed light-sensitive layers, each responding to a different range of wavelengths: the blue-sensitive layer, the green-sensitive layer, and the red-sensitive layer. These layers don't age at the same rate. That's where things get interesting, and sometimes unpredictable.
Several effects accumulate over time. First, overall sensitivity drops: the silver halide crystals gradually lose their ability to record light, which translates to an effective speed lower than the ISO printed on the box. Second, a base fog develops across the entire emulsion surface regardless of exposure. This fog reduces contrast and flattens the image. Sensitometric data typically shows that a fog density above 0.20 starts to compromise a negative emulsion; beyond that point, you begin losing highlights into murky grey.
The third effect, specific to color films, is color drift. The dye couplers responsible for forming colors during development break down at different rates in each layer. The red-sensitive layer tends to weaken first in many consumer color emulsions, leaving green to dominate. That's where the characteristic greenish cast of poorly stored film comes from. But it also depends on the manufacturer's formulation, storage history, and a bit of luck.
The Practical Rule for ISO Compensation
The rule you'll find everywhere on film photography forums is simple: one stop of overexposure per decade past the expiration date. A 400 ISO film expired ten years ago gets treated like a 200 ISO; expired twenty years ago, like a 100 ISO.
That's a starting point, not a hard truth. In practice a few nuances apply. Fast films (800 ISO and up) age faster than slow ones, so on those stocks a safer rule is one stop per five years rather than ten. On the other hand, a film that's been refrigerated since manufacture may still perform very close to its original specs, even several years past the expiration date.
In practice, on a camera with manual ISO control you simply dial down the speed below the nominal value. On a camera that reads DX coding, a piece of electrical tape or a sticker over the relevant contacts tricks the automatic reading. With a handheld meter, same approach: enter the compensated ISO, not the box speed.
Storage: Fridge, Freezer, or Drawer?
Heat and humidity are the two main enemies of photographic emulsion. Heat accelerates all the chemical degradation reactions. Humidity encourages mold growth and can cause the layers of a rolled film to stick together.
In the refrigerator (between 4 and 8°C / 39–46°F), the rate of degradation slows significantly. A film kept in the fridge can last several times its nominal shelf life without major loss. That's the minimum I'd recommend for any film you're not planning to shoot within the next month or so.
In the freezer (-18°C / 0°F or colder), chemical reactions are almost completely halted. Kodak Portra from the early 2000s pulled from a freezer can sometimes scan nearly indistinguishably from fresh stock. Ideal for anything you want to keep long-term.
Film stored at room temperature in a cool, dry spot, like a basement or a north-facing cupboard, ages faster than refrigerated film but much more slowly than film left in a hot car. Brief, intense heat does far more damage than slow aging at a reasonable ambient temperature.
What to Expect from Common Film Stocks
The three film stocks you'll run into most often on the expired secondhand market have fairly distinct aging behaviors.

Kodak Gold 200
Probably the most forgiving expired film stock you'll find. Its exposure latitude is generous, and its aging behavior tends to stay manageable even when the storage history is unknown. Typical drift runs toward magenta and yellow, with grain that gets progressively coarser but keeps a certain warmth. A Kodak Gold expired ten to fifteen years, with no particular care taken, will often still produce usable images, sometimes deliberately "vintage" looking ones. Beyond twenty years under unknown conditions, expect pronounced fog and fairly unpredictable color.
Fuji Superia 200 / 400
The Superia has a very recognizable color signature even when fresh: saturated greens, a slightly cool overall rendering. As it ages it tends to drift toward cyan and green, amplifying that signature. The result can be pleasant or quite overwhelming depending on how it was stored. Poorly kept batches can produce a fairly strong greenish fog, particularly in the brighter areas of the image. The Superia 400 shows more pronounced aging effects than the 200, consistent with the general behavior of faster films. Worth noting that Fuji Superia has been largely discontinued, so the rolls you find have typically been sitting around for several years already.
Agfa Vista 200 / 400
Discontinued in 2018, the Agfa Vista has become something of a grail on the secondhand market. What was once an inexpensive drugstore film (and was actually a rebadged Fujifilm product) now commands collector prices. Its aging follows patterns similar to the Superia, which makes sense given the shared heritage. The drift tends toward magenta on the Vista 200, and gets more complex on the 400. Batches that have surfaced since it was discontinued are generally six to ten years past date, which is still a workable range with one stop of compensation and some luck on the original storage.
Anticipating the Drift and Correcting at the Scanning Stage
There's no way to preview what an expired film will actually look like before you've developed it. What you can do is anticipate the likely direction of the drift based on the stock and what you know about storage, then correct at scanning.
An expired color negative with a green fog cast gets corrected by nudging red up in post. A magenta cast gets balanced with green. The corrections can be made in Lightroom, Capture One, or even GIMP, using the color balance tools or per-channel curves. It's not always possible to fully rescue a heavily degraded film, but a moderately aged roll with a mild drift often corrects quite cleanly.
For anyone doing their own scanning with daylight or a digital camera (reflective scan or negative reproduction), the white balance step on the film base is especially important. The orange base tint of an expired C-41 film shifts with age, and reading that base accurately is the key to a clean correction.
If you're sending your film to a lab, mentioning that it's expired can help the operator adjust their printing or scanning parameters. Not all labs do this automatically.

Run a test roll first: before committing to multiple rolls from the same expired batch, shoot one full roll varying exposure from -1 to +2 stops, ideally on subjects with neutral tones and consistent light. That gives you a reference point for the rest of the lot.
Stocks worth watching: Kodak Ultramax 400 (easy to find both fresh and secondhand) and Kodak ColorPlus 200 are solid alternatives to discontinued films, and slightly expired batches of both circulate online at reasonable prices. In medium format, expired boxes of Kodak Ektar 100 in 120 are worth hunting down.
Scanning tools: for correcting color drift, Negative Lab Pro (a Lightroom plugin) includes profiles for common film stocks and handles the orange mask well, which simplifies correction of old negatives considerably.
