Film Portrait Photography: Choosing Your Stock, Reading the Light, and Getting Consistent Results
Portrait work is probably where film still makes its strongest case. Not for nostalgic reasons, but practical ones: the way certain stocks render skin tones, the way a medium format negative absorbs a slightly soft focus, the way window light falls on a face without you needing to "fix" anything afterward. These things are repeatable, and that's what we're going to get into here.
Choosing Your Film Stock
The choice of film isn't about brand loyalty or what's trending. It's about what you want on the negative, and what light you're going to be working with.
Kodak Portra 400: the obvious choice for color, and for good reason
Portra 400 became the reference for color portrait work because it solves several problems at once. At ISO 400 it's fast enough to shoot in available indoor light without flash. The T-GRAIN emulsion is remarkably fine for that speed, which means you can enlarge portraits substantially without the grain overwhelming the subject's face. And the skin tone rendering is genuinely hard to beat, with exceptional color saturation across a wide range of lighting conditions.
There's also Portra 160, less versatile but even finer grained, which is the better call for studio work or outdoors in good light where you can afford to shoot wide open at f/2.
Ilford FP4 Plus 125: fine grain, controlled contrast, classic rendering
FP4 Plus is a panchromatic ISO 125 stock with fine grain, a well-behaved curve, and excellent exposure latitude. For black-and-white portrait work in decent light it's hard to improve on. The base speed does limit you, you'll need either good natural light or a flash, but in return you get deep blacks that aren't blocked up, bright whites that aren't blown, and a tonal range that feels close to classic documentary work of the 1970s and 80s.
In practice, FP4 Plus develops very cleanly in standard developers like ID-11 or Rodinal at 1+50 or 1+100, with development times well documented in Ilford's own data sheets. It's a predictable, stable emulsion that rewards careful exposure.
Ilford HP5 Plus 400: more flexibility, grain you just own
The moderate contrast and characteristic grain of HP5 Plus give portraits an organic texture. That's not necessarily a problem. That grain pushes the images toward a reportage feel that suits certain portrait styles very well.
Pushed to EI 1600 or 3200, HP5 Plus still holds a workable negative structure. For portraits under stage lighting, in low urban ambient, or in a dim interior, it's a serious option. At EI 3200 the grain is genuinely heavy, but sometimes that's exactly right for the subject.
Managing Light for Film Portraits
Natural light: window and open shade
Window light is probably the most accessible source for film portrait work, and often the most flattering. A north-facing window, or any window in open shade, gives you diffuse, wrapping light that sculpts the face gently without creating hard shadows.
A few practical points worth keeping in mind. The closer your subject stands to the window, the softer and more directional the light. Back them off two or three meters (six to ten feet) and it flattens out considerably. Positioning your subject at three-quarters to the window creates a natural Rembrandt pattern, with that small triangular highlight under the shadow-side eye. It happens on its own if the room has reasonably light walls, no reflector needed.
Open shade outdoors is the outdoor equivalent of a north-facing window: an overcast sky or the shadow of a building with open sky in front of your subject. The light stays directional but soft. With Portra 400 or HP5 you'll be well within handhold-able shutter speeds.
Flash and artificial light
An on-camera speedlight on a 35mm body is mainly useful in two portrait situations: filling shadows in contrasty natural light, or working indoors where the ambient simply isn't enough. In both cases the basic principle is the same, don't let the flash show. Setting the flash one to two stops below your ambient exposure reads naturally on film and avoids that flat, "nose-lit" look that kills the modeling in a face.
Studio flash with softboxes or umbrellas takes more setup, but gives you much tighter control over the direction and quality of light, and you can reproduce a configuration exactly from one session to the next, which matters if you're building a coherent portrait series. With Portra 160 or FP4 Plus in the studio you can work at f/5.6 to f/8 and benefit from a more forgiving depth of field, which takes some pressure off the focusing.
Exposure and Depth of Field
Exposure: a few useful reference points
For color portrait work on film, the general rule is to expose for the skin tones. If you're metering a contrasty scene, spot-meter or bring your meter close to the face. With Portra, a slight overexposure causes no problems at all. Plus one stop often produces an even smoother result with more detail retained in the highlights.
For black and white the principle is similar, but you also have to think ahead to development. If you want detailed highlights, expose generously and develop slightly less (N-minus development). If you want more contrast, flip that around. Zone system thinking applies here, but in practice, starting at box speed and adjusting from what you see on the prints is a perfectly sound approach.
Depth of field and fast lenses
Shooting wide open isolates your subject from the background, but it demands precise focus. On a 35mm body with an 85mm lens at f/1.8 or f/2, depth of field at a tight head-and-shoulders distance is often just a few centimeters. Focus has to land on the eyes, not the nose, not the near ear.
Medium Format for Portraits: Why It Actually Makes a Difference
A bigger negative, with real consequences
Moving from 35mm to medium format for portrait work isn't just about prestige or ergonomics. The 120 formats run from 4.5x6 cm up to 6x9 cm, and the much larger frame area means you're enlarging far less to reach a standard print size, so grain becomes nearly invisible even on ISO 400 stock.
On 35mm, HP5 Plus grain is fine for the speed. On a 6x6 cm negative, which is roughly four times the area, that same grain becomes far less visible. A 6x7 HP5 Plus negative developed normally will give you a 12x16 inch (30x40 cm) print with grain comparable to what ISO 100 film would produce from a 35mm negative at the same output size. You see that difference in the darkroom and you feel it in a scan.

Depth of field in medium format: mind the focal lengths
This is what tends to trip up photographers coming from 35mm. At the same f-stop, depth of field is significantly shallower in medium format because the actual focal lengths are longer. The 6x6 format is particularly interesting for its square frame, and the 6x7 produces a look that's immediately recognizable and very satisfying to work with, but neither forgives a sloppy focus pass.
At f/2.8 on an 80mm lens in 6x6, depth of field at one meter (about three feet) is very narrow. When it lands right it's beautiful; when it doesn't, it's frustrating. Pushing to EI 800 or EI 1600 on a medium format negative still produces remarkable results for available-light portrait work. In practice, most medium format portrait photographers end up working between f/4 and f/5.6, which gives more breathing room while still producing a pleasing background separation.
The pace of the session changes too
On 120 film you get 12 frames in 6x6, 10 in 6x7, or 16 in 4.5x6. That's a lot fewer than the 36 exposures on a 35mm roll, and it slows the session down. That's not necessarily a problem. It tends to force a more deliberate way of working, more actual dialogue with the subject. But it changes the dynamic, and if you're not used to it, you need to account for that before the shoot.
Development and Post-Processing
Color: C-41 at the lab or at home
C-41 is the standard process for color negative stocks like Portra. It can be done at home with kits available from specialist suppliers, but it's more demanding than black-and-white work: the temperature needs to be held precisely at 38°C (100°F), and the chemistry is more involved to manage. For most people getting started with color film portraits, sending to a lab is the more sensible call, at least initially.
The lab will return either negatives alone or negatives plus scans. For professional use or large prints, high-resolution TIFF scans give you richer, more detailed files to work from. For portrait work specifically, paying for a high-resolution scan is worth it: you'll be able to correct exposure, adjust the tone balance, and crop before printing or sharing.
Black and white: home developing is very accessible
Home B&W developing is considerably simpler than C-41. Rodinal, ID-11, HC-110: the classic developers are well documented, inexpensive, and stable. For FP4 Plus in portrait work, ID-11 or D-76 at 20°C (68°F) gives very clean results, with development times to confirm in Ilford's official data sheets depending on the dilution you're using. It's a predictable stock, and home B&W developing is still the best way to maintain full control over the entire process.
Scanning vs. darkroom printing
Scanning is the most practical route for sharing or archiving portraits. A good flatbed scan on an Epson V600 or V700, or a professional lab scan, gives you a usable file for prints up to 12x16 inches (30x40 cm) or larger from a medium format negative.
Darkroom printing gives you something different. A well-exposed, properly fixed print on fiber-base paper has a presence that digital output rarely matches exactly. For black-and-white portraits especially, that's true. But it's an investment in time, equipment, and dedicated darkroom space that doesn't suit everyone. If you don't have a darkroom yet and want to start somewhere, start with scanning.
Going Further
Film stocks worth exploring: Kodak Portra 160 (color, even finer grained than the 400, best in studio or good natural light) and Fujifilm Neopan Acros II (black and white, very fine grain, excellent tonal rendering for available-light portraits) are both worth your time once you're comfortable with the basics.
Medium format gear for starters: the Mamiya C330 (twin-lens reflex, 6x6, interchangeable lenses, solid and reasonably priced) is a good entry point for medium format portrait work, considerably cheaper than a Hasselblad while delivering comparable image quality. The Pentax 67 is another well-regarded option, appreciated for how well it handles in the field despite the 6x7 format.
For home B&W developing: Ilford's own development data sheets (on the Ilford Photo website) and the Massive Dev Chart are the two indispensable references for times and dilutions matched to your specific developer and film combination.
