Light Lens Lab Wants to Make Its Own Black-and-White Film Stock, and This Is Worth Taking Seriously
Most Leica enthusiasts already know Light Lens Lab for their replica lenses, particularly the EP-L series reproducing the look of the Summilux and the Canon 50mm f/1.1. Those lenses found a real audience among rangefinder shooters who want that particular rendering without hunting down vintage glass at vintage prices. But in 2024, the company announced something nobody quite expected: they're working on manufacturing their own black-and-white film stock. That announcement is worth sitting with, not because the film is hitting shelves tomorrow, but because what's being attempted here is rarer and harder than it might look from the outside.
What Light Lens Lab Has Shown So Far
The company has been sharing updates on social media and through their online community with an unusual degree of transparency for this industry. You can see large format test shots, 8x10 and 4x5, photos of their coating laboratory, comparison plates at different concentrations. The tone is that of a team learning in public and not pretending otherwise.
The challenges they name explicitly include emulsion coating uniformity, meaning the consistency of the sensitive layer deposit across the substrate. That's exactly where similar projects have come unstuck before. Getting an emulsion that responds well to light is one thing. Coating it with perfect homogeneity across kilometers of plastic base stock, at the right thickness, without bubbles or sensitivity variations from one edge of the film to the other, is an entirely different problem. Established manufacturers like Kodak and Ilford have decades of proprietary engineering behind their coating machines, and that knowledge isn't sitting in any accessible manual.
Light Lens Lab is targeting a 2026 commercial release. No pricing has been announced, and no target ISO has been publicly confirmed in any definitive way. What we know is that current tests are being done in large format, which makes sense: working in 8x10 lets you control the emulsion over significant surface area without the mechanical constraints of 35mm or 120 transport. Making Film in 2025: Why It's Actually Hard

Ferrania in Italy spent years rebuilding their production capacity after recovering equipment from a shuttered factory. Despite a successful Kickstarter and massive community support, the road from prototype to shippable product was far longer and harder than anyone had predicted. The result, the P30 Alpha, eventually made it out the door, but with limitations and delays that few had anticipated.
Kosmo Foto Mono, Silberra, and the other brands that have emerged in recent years don't manufacture their own emulsion. They source from existing suppliers, mostly in Eastern Europe, and build their product from existing stock. That's a perfectly valid approach and it's genuinely expanded what's available to us, but it's not the same thing as developing an emulsion from scratch.
Light Lens Lab appears to be going further than that. If their updates accurately represent what they're actually doing, they're working on the emulsion chemistry itself, not just the packaging. That's more ambitious and considerably more risky.
What It Would Actually Mean for the Community
The question film shooters should be asking isn't "will this film be good?" but rather "do we need another manufacturer?"
Short answer: yes, probably.
The film supply chain currently rests on a very small number of emulsion manufacturers. Kodak Alaris, Ilford Photo, Fujifilm (who have cut their lineup significantly), and a handful of smaller producers like Foma in the Czech Republic and Adox in Germany. Nearly all current film production is concentrated in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and Germany. A credible Asian manufacturer would open new supply chains and potentially different price points in certain markets. Speculative for now, but not uninteresting.
Reasons to Keep Expectations Grounded
Nothing in this announcement guarantees that Light Lens Lab's film will be good, affordable, or even released on schedule. The obstacles are real and well-documented.
Emulsion uniformity directly affects exposure latitude and consistency from one print to the next. A film whose sensitivity varies unpredictably across the roll creates real problems in development, and those variations can be subtle, invisible until you start comparing darkroom prints or scans side by side.
Long-term emulsion stability is another factor. A film stock needs to store properly at normal temperatures, not fog prematurely, and respond predictably across a reasonable range of developers. Designing an emulsion that satisfies all of that simultaneously is not a matter of months.
And then there's probably the most underestimated challenge: the move from large format sheets to roll film introduces completely different mechanical constraints. The film has to survive being wound, transported through a camera with rapid mechanical movement, and handled across tension variations when unrolling in cold conditions. None of that gets tested working exclusively with 8x10 sheets.
Why This Is Worth Following Anyway
Even if the 2026 film doesn't meet every expectation, even if it arrives late or with early limitations, what Light Lens Lab is doing here has real value for the community. It demonstrates that film manufacturing isn't exclusively the domain of last century's industrial giants. Other projects, Film Ferrania being the obvious example, along with smaller workshop experiments like wet plate collodion, have shown that small teams can develop viable emulsions when they have the resources and the patience.
Light Lens Lab already proved with their lenses that they can take a complex product through to commercial release. That's not a guarantee of success in photographic chemistry, but it's a better track record than starting from nothing.
What the community can do concretely is follow their updates with a critical eye, not a skeptical one, not a naively enthusiastic one. Ask for data: target ISO, grain character, compatible developers, formats available at launch. And if the film does arrive in 2026, test it seriously before passing judgment. Run it through known developers like HC-110, D-76, or Ilfosol 3 and compare the results against established emulsions.
A new film manufacturer is potentially good news. But right now it's still emulsion chemistry being tested on large format sheets. The distance between those two things is real.
