Light Meters in 2026: Built-in, Smartphone, or Dedicated Meter — What's Right for Film Photography?

If you've been shooting film for any length of time, you've probably wrestled with this question at least once. Your camera has a built-in meter, there's a free app on your phone, and dedicated meters run anywhere from $50 to well over $500. So what do you actually need?

The honest answer depends on how you shoot, what gear you're using, and how much control you want over the final negative. Let's work through it.

Built-in Meters: Good Enough, Until They're Not

Most 35mm SLRs and many rangefinders from the 1970s onward came with built-in TTL meters. For general shooting in decent light, they're genuinely useful. They read the scene through the lens, they factor in the focal length automatically, and once you understand how your camera meters you can get consistent results with very little fuss.

The limitations show up in specific situations. Built-in meters are almost always reflective meters, meaning they measure light bouncing off the subject rather than light falling on it. That's fine for average scenes but can mislead you badly with high contrast, very dark subjects, or when you're shooting in snow or on the beach. The meter tries to render everything as middle grey and sometimes it succeeds where you actually wanted something brighter or darker.

Sekonic L-858D. If you need spot metering, this is where you go. It has a 1-degree spot, a range of -5 to 22.9 EV, full incident capability, and it can interface with Sekonic's Exposure Profile Target system for calibrating to specific film stocks and development combinations. It launched at $599 USD. It's a professional tool and it's priced accordingly. For large format work, zone system practitioners, or anyone doing critical film testing, it's genuinely worth the price. For most 35mm shooters it's more meter than they need.

Reveni Labs Light Meter. Worth mentioning because it represents a different approach. This Canadian meter, originally launched on Kickstarter, weighs about 8 grams and mounts directly to a cold shoe. It measures reflective light only, no incident dome, but it's always with your camera. At around $125 CAD it's an accessible entry point and the form factor suits anyone who wants something permanently attached to a rangefinder or a manual camera with a dead meter. The reflective-only limitation is real, but for a lot of shooting conditions it's simply not a problem.

Incident vs. Reflective: Why This Actually Matters

It's worth dwelling on this for a moment because it shapes which tool makes sense for your work.

Reflective metering measures light bouncing off the subject. Your camera's built-in meter does this, phone apps do this, and some handheld meters do this too. The result depends on what the subject looks like. A dark subject tricks the meter into overexposing; a bright subject tricks it into underexposing. Experienced photographers compensate for this intuitively, but it takes time to develop that instinct.

Incident metering measures the light in the scene regardless of subject tone. It's inherently more consistent because you're measuring the cause (the light) rather than the effect (the reflected light). Portrait photographers and studio photographers tend to work exclusively with incident readings. In the field, incident metering is also how you take a quick, reliable reading when you can't easily get close to your subject or when the scene has very mixed tones.

Neither method is always superior. Spot metering a specific tone can be extremely precise for certain subjects. But if you're trying to simplify your exposure workflow and get more consistent negatives, learning incident metering is one of the more useful things you can do.

Which One Should You Actually Use?

Here's how I'd think about it:

If you're shooting a camera with a working, accurate built-in meter and you mostly shoot in reasonable light, use it. Learn its quirks, understand what scenes will fool it, apply the compensation instinctively. It's there, it costs nothing extra, and fighting it is a waste of energy.

If you want a backup, a learning tool, or you're shooting a meterless camera and don't want to spend much, a smartphone app gets you surprisingly far. myLightMeter Pro is worth the few dollars it costs. Just accept the reflective-only limitation and factor that into how you use it.

If you shoot medium or large format, if you work in a studio, if you shoot portraits regularly, or if you're serious about consistent results across your negatives, a dedicated meter with incident capability is worth owning. The Sekonic L-308X is the obvious recommendation at that price point. It's been the go-to compact meter for working photographers for years and that reputation is earned.

If you're deep into zone system work, shooting large format with a methodical approach to exposure, or you want to do serious film and developer calibration, the L-858D makes sense. The spot function and the calibration system are genuinely useful at that level of practice. At any other level, you're paying for features you won't use.

Going Further

The most important thing is not which meter you own but whether you understand what it's telling you. Exposure is a skill built over time, across rolls of film, with attention to what went wrong and why. A $600 meter won't make your exposures better if you don't understand the fundamentals. A smartphone app used thoughtfully by someone who knows how to read light will outperform a professional meter used blindly.

Shoot, develop, evaluate your negatives, and keep notes. That feedback loop is what actually builds exposure instinct, whatever tool you're using to take the reading.
