Lomo MC-A: Does Lomography's First Real Autofocus Compact Justify Its $550 Price Tag?
For years, Lomography carved out a very specific niche: plastic bodies, a deliberate lo-fi aesthetic, intentionally imperfect results. The Lomo MC-A throws all of that out the window. It's a new 35mm compact, built in metal, with a multi-coated glass lens, LiDAR autofocus, full manual controls, and a price that nudges $550. Hard not to take it seriously. A few months into its release, real-world impressions are starting to accumulate, and the picture is a mixed one.
What the MC-A promises on paper
The Minitar-II 32mm f/2.8 is the heart of the thing. Five elements in five groups, multi-coated glass, 40cm (about 16 inches) minimum focus distance: this is a serious optic, and you can feel it in use. The 32mm focal length sits slightly wider than the 35mm you'd find on most vintage compacts, giving you a bit more angle without pushing into genuine wide-angle territory. For street work or relaxed reportage, it's honestly a smart choice.
For controls, the MC-A gives you shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/500s plus bulb mode, aperture from f/2.8 to f/16, ±2 stops of exposure compensation, manual ISO from 12 to 3200, and automatic DX coding. The shutter speed dial and aperture selector are physical, on the body itself. For anyone coming from film who wants to keep a hand on the exposure, that's a real difference from a simple point-and-shoot.
The autofocus is LiDAR-based, with the option to switch over to zone focusing. The available zone distances are 0.4 / 0.8 / 1.5 / 3m / infinity. Having both options on the same compact is genuinely uncommon, and it makes the camera usable in situations where AF would struggle, such as very low light or low-contrast subjects.
Film advance is manual, by thumbwheel, and so is rewind. That decision eliminates a motor, which means less noise and less battery drain. Speaking of which, the camera takes a rechargeable CR2, which is a sensible compromise. If it dies in the field, a standard CR2 will do the job without hunting for a proprietary charger.
The body is metal. The lens uses glass elements rather than plastic. There's a small LCD on the top plate showing frame count, battery level, and flash status. All of this fits into a format that stays genuinely compact and pocketable.
The autofocus in practice: capable, but not quiet

Optical quality: better than the Lomography name might lead you to expect
Let's be honest: the Lomography name carries baggage. For a lot of serious film photographers, it calls to mind cheap plastic, unpredictable results, and a student-party aesthetic. The MC-A pushes back against that.
The images have character. Sharp enough to feel considerably more premium than a toy camera or cheap plastic compact, but not clinically perfect either. On slow black-and-white film stock, the detail is there. On ISO 400 color negative, results are consistent and well-exposed in most conditions.
The built-in flash uses a Xenon system, with the direct, hard light that implies. It's the yearbook-photo flash look that some people love and others avoid entirely. It doesn't do subtle.
Against the Rollei 35 AF and the Analogue aF-1
The MC-A isn't alone in a segment that barely existed five years ago: new 35mm compacts with autofocus and manual controls.
The Rollei 35 AF is the only new film camera in this category that costs more, at around $800, and it's also the MC-A's most direct competitor, offering LiDAR autofocus and manual controls alongside a 35mm f/2.8 lens and a shutter speed range of 1 to 1/500s with a long exposure mode up to 60 seconds. Reviews of its optics and mechanical reliability have been generally positive, though the price gap is significant. Focusia has already published a detailed article on the Rollei 35 AF; if you've read it, you know it's playing in the same court but at a considerably different budget.
The Analogue aF-1 is newer still, with LiDAR autofocus, a 35mm f/2.8, and the stated goal of eliminating the main frustration of film compacts. It was available for pre-order at around €449 at announcement. Field reports are still thin on the ground, so it's too early to compare properly.
What positions the MC-A within this group is its combination of full manual controls and a price that sits between the other two. For someone who wants more than a basic automatic point-and-shoot but can't stretch to the Rollei's budget, the MC-A makes logical sense. But the frame spacing issue shifts the calculation: at $550, a reliable transport mechanism isn't an unreasonable expectation.

The real verdict
The MC-A is a good camera with a known manufacturing flaw. That's not a small thing.
Everything related to the optics, general ergonomics, control flexibility, and body construction is genuinely well done. The LiDAR autofocus works in the vast majority of situations. The 32mm produces pleasing images with character without going off the rails. The rechargeable battery is a practical choice. If you want a new compact that blends classic Lomography aesthetics with more precision, usability, and flexibility, the MC-A is worth serious consideration.
But the irregular frame spacing, consistently documented by a range of independent testers, is a real mechanical problem for a camera at this price. On color negative film stock, the main consequence is extra work at the scanning stage. On slide film or for enlarger printing, it's a genuine source of frustration.
If Lomography releases a mechanical revision or a corrected production run, the picture changes. Until then, check whether the issue has been officially addressed before buying, and run a test roll that you develop and scan yourself before taking it anywhere that matters.
Going further
Slow film for testing the optics. Loading an ISO 25 or 50 black-and-white stock (Fomapan 25, Rollei RPX 25) into the MC-A is a good way to see what the Minitar-II actually produces, without grain masking the fine detail. A useful reference point before deciding whether the optical quality meets your standards.
Lomochrome film stocks. If you want to evaluate the MC-A's color rendering and vignetting under favorable conditions, Lomochrome Purple or Metropolis pair well with the lens's mild character. It's a coherent combination, and both stocks are easy to source directly through the Lomography shop.
