Monobath: Develop a Roll of Film in Three Minutes Without the Fuss
There's a category of photographic chemistry that tends to split the analog community right down the middle: the monobath, a single solution that develops and fixes film simultaneously. One chemical, one step, no intermediate rinse between developer and fixer. On paper it sounds almost too easy. In practice, it genuinely is that easy, which is both its appeal and its main limitation.
The monobath isn't a new idea. The earliest formulas date back to the 1960s (Gordon Crawley's FX 6-A formula, published in the British Journal of Photography in 1964, is generally cited as the foundational reference). What's changed is the availability of modern commercial products that are well-formulated, reasonably priced, and not particularly hard to find. Cinestill Df96 is by far the most talked-about product on the market today, but it's not the only one worth knowing about.
How it works, chemically speaking
In conventional processing, developer and fixer work in opposition. The developer reduces exposed silver halides to metallic silver, forming the image, while the fixer dissolves the unexposed halides to stabilize the negative. Combine the two too early and the fixer can cut development short before the image is fully formed.
Monobath formulas get around this through reaction kinetics. The developer, typically built around alkaline developing agents like phenidone (or an equivalent) combined with hydroquinone, acts faster than the fixer at the start of the process. Sodium thiosulfate, which handles the fixing, only begins working in earnest once the negative has reached a certain density threshold. Both reactions happen concurrently, but the kinetics are calibrated so development gets a head start. The formula is designed so that by the end of the prescribed time, the film is both fully developed and fully fixed.
This has a direct practical consequence: there's much less room to manipulate the result than with conventional chemistry. You can't push contrast simply by extending development time. The film reaches a kind of predictable equilibrium, and that's entirely by design.
Cinestill Df96: the benchmark monobath
Df96 is available as a ready-to-use liquid (1 litre) or as a concentrated powder to reconstitute. The recommended temperature range runs from about 20 to 28°C (68 to 82°F), which means it works fine at room temperature in most situations. At 21-24°C, standard development time is roughly 3 to 5 minutes. Push that up to 27°C and you're looking at around 3 minutes, considerably faster than D-76 or Rodinal.
One litre handles approximately 16 rolls of 35mm (or the equivalent in 120). The solution is reusable, unlike a 1+1 developer used one-shot.
Results-wise, Df96 produces good negatives with a range of common film stocks. Kodak Tri-X 400 comes out well, with manageable grain and contrast that's slightly compressed compared to standard D-76 development. Ilford HP5 Plus behaves similarly, with a somewhat softer rendering than usual. Where things get genuinely interesting is with faster stocks: Ilford Delta 3200, shot at 3200 or even 6400 ISO, gives usable results with Df96, which makes it a defensible choice for low-light reportage work where development speed matters more than ultimate control.
Cinestill publishes a compatibility chart on their website and it's worth reading before you start. Some orthopanchromatic films and T-grain emulsions respond differently, and it's better to verify before committing an important roll.
Other products on the market
A note for anyone who's read comparisons online: Adox XT-3, which sometimes comes up in this context, is not a monobath. It's a conventional ascorbic acid-based developer, functionally equivalent to Kodak XTOL, supplied as a two-part powder (Part A + Part B) and used alongside a separate fixer like any standard chemistry. An excellent developer, but it does nothing to simplify single-bath processing. The confusion circulates online often enough that it's worth naming.
Actual commercial monobaths currently available:
- Cinestill Df96 (liquid or powder, 1L): the most documented, most widely available in North America and Europe.
- Bellini FX6a: a modern reformulation of Crawley's original formula. Develops and fixes in about 8 minutes at room temperature. Available through several European retailers, occasionally imported into Canada.
- Bergger One: less common, same principle. Documented results are solid on HP5 and other mainstream stocks.
- Ultrafine Monobath: a more budget-friendly option, distributed primarily in the US.
The Bellini FX6a deserves a mention because it's a credible alternative when Df96 isn't available or costs too much to import. Its longer development time (8 minutes versus 3 to 5 for Df96) also gives it a slight edge in terms of tolerance for small temperature variations.
The real trade-offs, plainly stated
A monobath developer isn't magic. Its advantages are genuine, and so are its constraints.
What you gain:
- Extreme simplicity. Pour, agitate, wait, rinse.
- Real time savings. Depending on the product and temperature, your black-and-white film is developed and fixed in 3 to 8 minutes.
- Less equipment. No separate bottles, no careful intermediate rinse. Ideal for travel or occasional developing sessions.
- Consistent, predictable results, as long as you control temperature and timing.
What you give up:
Contrast control is reduced. You can't dial in exposure index as precisely as with a conventional developer. Pushing beyond two stops often gives less satisfying results than you'd get from D-76 or DD-X, and highlights tend to block up faster.
Temperature management is still critical despite the relatively wide working range. A few degrees either way makes a noticeable difference in negative density.
Cost per roll runs slightly higher than a conventional developer used across multiple sessions, especially compared to diluted D-76 or Rodinal used one-shot for small formats.
And on dense or overexposed negatives, it's worth keeping an eye on whether fixation is truly complete. A short follow-up bath in plain fixer, if archival permanence is a priority, is not a bad idea.
Who this actually makes sense for
Travelers are probably the ideal users. One bottle to carry, no separate fixer, no complex chemistry to manage in a hotel room. If you're shooting on the road and want to develop on the spot so you can scan and share quickly, Df96 in powder form (lighter and less regulated for air travel) is a serious option.
Street photographers who shoot a lot and want to see their negatives quickly without running a full protocol every evening will find it genuinely useful. The time savings are real.
Darkroom beginners might see it as a way in, though it's worth being clear-eyed: a monobath won't teach you conventional processing. It's a useful shortcut, not a foundation. Anyone who wants to actually understand analog chemistry will need to move to a two-bath process sooner or later.
Where it doesn't fit: the photographer who fine-tunes development times per film stock, works in the Zone System with N-1 or N+1 compensations, or wants very fine grain with precise control over tonal range. And anyone developing high volumes regularly will eventually find the cost per roll adds up. For those situations, a conventional developer (D-76, XTOL, Rodinal, depending on what you're after) remains the better tool.
