Pushing Black-and-White Film: Choosing Between Microphen, DDX, HC-110, Xtol, and Rodinal

Push processing seems like a simple question on the surface: how much longer do I develop? But behind that calculation sits a more consequential choice, which is the developer. Two rolls pushed two stops can look completely different depending on what's in the tank. Grain, shadow detail, highlight retention, overall contrast: all of it shifts with the chemistry.

Here's how five common developers actually behave when you're asking them to compensate for one to three stops of underexposure.

What push processing demands from a developer

Pushing a film means compensating for real underexposure through extended development, a more energetic developer, or both. You're not creating light that wasn't there. You're amplifying the latent signal in areas that received very little exposure. Which means the deepest shadows, where light was genuinely absent, often stay blocked up no matter what you do. Push processing works mostly in the midtones and highlights.

What you're looking for is a developer that penetrates the crystals quickly enough to lift the weakest shadow detail without blowing highlights or generating more grain than necessary. The trouble is those three things tend to pull in opposite directions, and that's exactly why the choice matters.

Microphen: purpose-built for this

Microphen (Ilford) is probably the developer most directly designed with push processing in mind. Its phenidone-based formula gives it a strong capacity to work in low densities, which translates in practice to better shadow recovery at +1 and +2 stops.

At +1 stop the results are often very clean: grain stays controlled, shadows are readable, highlights still manageable. That's where it really earns its reputation. At +2 you start to see grain climb and contrast deepen, but the image holds together, with more open shadows than you'd get from Rodinal or HC-110 under the same conditions. At +3, highlights tend to block up fairly quickly and grain becomes genuinely noticeable.

DDX: fine grain, clean push

DDX (also Ilford) is often described as the go-to developer for fast films: Delta 3200, pushed HP5, Delta 400. In practice that reputation holds up. The liquid concentrate (diluted 1+4 for standard use) produces negatives with fine, well-structured grain even under difficult exposure conditions.

For push processing, DDX stands out mostly for grain quality. At +2 stops on Delta 3200 rated at 12,800 ISO, the grain is obviously there, but it's even and without clumping, with a texture that can recall classic reportage film stocks. Highlights hold better than with Microphen at aggressive pushes, something many photographers attribute to DDX's gentler action overall.

HC-110: flexibility at any dilution

HC-110 (originally Kodak, now distributed under various labels) is a thick liquid concentrate that can be diluted several ways, making it one of the more flexible developers around. Dilution B (1+31 from concentrate) is the most common starting point; Dilution H (1+63) gives longer development times and slightly finer grain.

For push processing, HC-110 works well at +1 and +2 stops with films like Tri-X or HP5. Shadow recovery is solid, contrast runs a bit higher than Microphen, and grain stays reasonable. It won't give you the most open shadows on the list, but it's reliable and predictable, which counts for a lot.

At +3 stops things get contrasty: highlights go easily, shadows hold but with less separation. That can be intentional if you're after a dramatic look, but if you need full tonal range from a pushed negative, other developers will serve you better.

Xtol: fine grain above everything else

Xtol (Kodak) is often the first choice for photographers who want the finest possible grain while pushing. Its ascorbate-based formula (vitamin C and DMAE) is gentle in action with excellent acutance, which shows up as very fine midtone detail in the negative.

For push processing, Xtol at stock or 1+1 dilution gives impressive results at +1 and +2 stops with films like T-Max 400, Tri-X, or HP5. Grain at +2 stops often compares to what you'd get at +1 with a more ordinary developer. Highlights behave well and shadows are worked cleanly.

At +3 stops, Xtol shows its limits: the grain advantage is real, but the deepest shadows stay blocked. That's not really an Xtol-specific problem, it's just the physical ceiling of push processing, but Xtol doesn't compensate with extra energy in the low densities the way Microphen does.

Rodinal: grain as a creative choice

Rodinal (originally Agfa, now available as R09 One Shot, Adonal, and similar) is in a category of its own. It wasn't designed for push processing in the conventional sense, but people use it for exactly that, often deliberately, because it produces something the others simply don't.

At +1 stop, Rodinal already gives pronounced grain with very high acutance: edges are sharp, almost aggressive, and texture is very present. At +2, and especially +3, the grain becomes a graphic element in its own right. Highlights block up fairly easily, shadows tend to close off, and overall contrast is high.

None of that is a problem if it's what you're after. For night reportage, documentary work where visible grain is part of the intention, or any project where texture carries meaning, pushing in Rodinal can be exactly the right call. The look is expressive and immediately recognizable.

What you shouldn't expect from it: nuance in the shadows, gentleness in the highlights, or anything approaching a discreet grain structure. It's a creative tool, not a recovery tool.

One other notable advantage: Rodinal keeps almost indefinitely in a sealed bottle. Bottles from 30 years ago still work fine. And it's used in very small quantities (1+25 to 1+100), making it one of the most economical developers per roll you'll find.

Choosing based on what you actually need

Shadow recovery, priority on low densities: Microphen. That's its native territory. At +1 and +2 stops, very few developers do more to open up underexposed areas.

Fine grain with fast film stocks: DDX for Delta 3200 and HP5, Xtol for T-Max 400 and Tri-X. Both work well at +2 stops, with different rendering characteristics depending on your preference.

Versatility and long shelf life: HC-110. Less spectacular in the shadows, but reliable, economical, and practically immortal as a concentrate.

Expressive grain and strong contrast: Rodinal. Not for every situation or every photographer, but when that look is intentional, nothing else quite matches it.

One thing that often gets overlooked: the film stock matters as much as the developer. Pushing HP5 in Rodinal and pushing Delta 3200 in the same bath are two very different experiences. Delta 3200, with its tabular grain structure, responds differently to strong dilutions. Before settling on a developer, think about the combination, not just one side of it.
