RC vs. Fiber-Base Paper in the Darkroom: Choosing What Actually Fits Where You Are
Almost everyone who spends time in the darkroom eventually asks the same question: is it really worth making the move to fiber-base paper, or does RC do the job just as well? The honest answer is that it depends on what you're trying to accomplish, how much time you have, and what trade-offs you're willing to live with. Both papers are legitimate tools. They're just not the same tool.
What "RC" and "fiber-base" actually mean in practice
RC paper (resin-coated) has a paper core encapsulated on both sides by a polyethylene layer. That resin barrier keeps chemistry from soaking into the base, which is what makes processing so fast: the developer, stop bath, and fixer all work at the emulsion surface only. The paper rinses in minutes and dries flat in not much longer.
Fiber-base paper is exactly what the name says, paper all the way through. The name "baryta" refers to the barium sulfate coating applied to the base before the emulsion goes on. That white, opaque layer acts as a reflective foundation and contributes to the luminosity of the highlights and the depth of the blacks. No resin. Chemistry penetrates the base, and that changes everything about how you handle it.
Those two different constructions account for almost every practical difference in handling, image quality, and archival permanence between the two types.
The visual difference: what you actually see in the tray
The most immediately noticed difference between RC and fiber-base is shadow depth. On RC, the blacks are solid, but there's often a slight optical veil from the resin layer. On a well-exposed, well-developed fiber print, the blacks are noticeably richer. It's not just an impression, it's physical: the barium sulfate base reflects white light more efficiently, and the thicker emulsion allows for finer tonal gradation.
The highlights are different too. On a fiber print, specular whites have a particular luminous quality that's genuinely hard to put into words, but you feel it when you hold a good baryta print under decent light.
RC delivers perfectly respectable results for a lot of purposes. Contrast is well-defined, midtones are honest. For contact sheets, work prints, or standard presentation prints, RC gets the job done without complaint.
Handling in the darkroom
This is where the differences become very concrete.
Development. Both paper types develop in the same chemistry (Ilford Multigrade, Kodak Dektol, Ilford PQ Universal, and so on) and with the same basic approach. The image comes up slightly slower on fiber than on RC, but not so dramatically that it changes how you work. Recommended development times generally fall in the 60 to 90 second range for both, depending on the developer and dilution.
Fixing. This is where things start to diverge. RC fixes quickly in a rapid fixer. Fiber-base needs either two fixing baths (to avoid over-fixing, which harms the image and complicates washing) or a single carefully timed bath. Over-fixing on fiber happens fast when you're distracted, and it makes washing even harder. RC doesn't carry those same risks.
Washing. The big practical difference. RC washes in 4 to 10 minutes under running water. Fiber-base needs an extended wash to reach archival quality. With a wash-aid like Ilford Washaid, you can bring that down to around 10 minutes while still hitting archival standards. Without it, residual fixer stays locked in the fibers and will degrade the image over time. This is the most common failure mode with fiber paper: you rush the wash or skip it, and the print starts going yellow after a few years.
Archival permanence: fiber's real advantage
Properly processed fiber prints can last generations. The Library of Congress and most major conservation institutions prefer fiber-base for archival silver gelatin work. The resin layer in RC ages, and over long periods can crack or delaminate. If you're printing with a 50 or 100-year horizon in mind, fiber-base with a rigorous wash protocol is the documented choice.
Toning: an argument that doesn't get enough attention
Fiber-base paper is particularly well-suited to chemical toning. Toning on RC is possible but often shallower, less even, and some toners simply don't take well.
If you want to work with warm tones (sulfide/sepia toning), blue-black tones (gold toning), or use dilute selenium toning to deepen and protect your blacks, fiber-base is pretty much essential. That matters a lot if fine art printing is where you're headed.
Papers available in Canada
On the RC side, Ilford's Multigrade RC Deluxe is an excellent paper, one of their more recently developed emulsions with a characteristic curve that sits much closer to a straight line, and it works well with conventionally grained negatives. It comes in glossy, pearl, and satin. It's a great paper for learning and everyday work, and you can find it at most film photography retailers across Canada.
On the fiber side, the Ilford Multigrade FB Classic is a variable-contrast premium fiber paper on a heavy baryta base, built for printers who want neutral tone, fine clarity, and good toner response. It's available in glossy and matte, with Cooltone and Warmtone versions if you're after a specific tonality.
Fomabrom, from Czech manufacturer Foma, is a variable-contrast conventional silver halide fiber paper. Less well-known than Ilford, but often more affordable, and well-regarded among photographers looking for a budget-friendly alternative without giving up too much quality. Tone runs from slightly warm to neutral depending on the version.
Adox (a German brand) makes the MCC 110 and Adox Baryta in fiber versions. Harder to find in Canadian stores, but available online through North American specialty distributors. They have a solid reputation with photographers who want a classic rendering.
Cost versus benefit, depending on where you are
If you're new to the darkroom, RC is the right starting point. The purists and experienced printers tend to gravitate toward fiber, but when you're learning, RC just fits better. Not only because of cost, but because of workflow. You can run through dozens of prints in a session without waiting for sheets to dry or managing long wash cycles. That frees up your attention for what actually matters early on: understanding exposure, contrast, dodging and burning.
Once you're comfortable with the fundamentals, moving to fiber-base is the natural next step. It's not mandatory, but for a lot of people it's a genuine revelation. That first successful fiber print changes how you understand what a print can be.
For contact sheets and daily work prints, RC stays the practical standard for nearly everyone, including photographers who print exclusively on fiber for finished work. Using fiber for evaluating negatives would just be wasteful.

The difference is real, but it's not prohibitive when you consider that a serious fiber print typically represents dozens of hours of upstream work, from the shoot through to the darkroom session.
The technique doesn't change
One thing worth remembering: fiber-base paper doesn't automatically improve a poorly exposed or poorly developed print. The same mistakes on RC or fiber produce bad prints, and on fiber those mistakes cost more. Reading your negative, choosing the right contrast grade, exposing a test strip correctly, timing your development — all of that stays exactly the same. Fiber is less forgiving of sloppiness, especially at the fixing and washing stages.
Going further
If you want to get started with fiber-base without overcomplicating it, start with Ilford Multigrade FB Classic Glossy in 8x10 (a box of 25 sheets is plenty to begin with). Use the same developer you already use for RC, there's no reason to change chemistry. Pick up some Ilford Washaid (or equivalent) to bring your wash time down to something manageable in a home darkroom.
For contact sheets and everyday work prints, Ilford Multigrade RC Deluxe Pearl is still hard to beat for convenience and quality. Keeping both types in stock and switching depending on the project is probably what most serious printers actually do.
