Sending Your Film to a Lab: How to Choose, What to Ask, and Avoid the Usual Pitfalls

On this blog we spend a lot of time on home development and DIY scanning. That's our usual territory. But honestly, the vast majority of people shooting film in 2026 are sending their rolls to an outside lab, and that's a perfectly reasonable choice. Developing at home takes equipment, space, time, and a learning curve that not everyone wants to climb. Outsourcing it is valid.

What's less valid is outsourcing it blind. You hear the same disappointments over and over: scans too small to print from, colors corrected so aggressively the images look digital, negatives coming back scratched or badly rewound. Almost always, those problems could have been avoided by asking two or three questions before dropping the roll in the mail.

That's exactly what this article is: what you should know before choosing a lab, whether you're in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada, whether you're shooting C-41 color, black and white, or E-6 if you're working with slide film.

Local lab or mail-in: what's the real difference?

The first question is logistical. If you're in Montreal, Quebec City, or another place with an active film scene, you probably have access to at least one in-person specialty lab. If you're outside a major center, or if the nearest option is a drugstore photo counter, mail-in becomes the only realistic route pretty quickly.

In-person specialty labs have the obvious advantage of direct contact. You can drop off your film, ask questions, and in some cases pick up your negatives the same day. Sometimes you even get to see part of the process happen. In Quebec, a few places have built solid reputations. Studio Argentique, active since 2015, runs a full lab out of their address on Rachel Est in Montreal and also accepts mail-in orders from anywhere in the world. Sténopé Lab opened in the Limoilou neighbourhood of Quebec City in January 2024, operating as both a photo lab and a print and framing shop. MTL Analogue is a newer Montreal entry, launched in 2025. Gosselin Photo also offers development for slides, color negatives, and black and white, though in the context of a large-format photo retailer rather than a dedicated specialty lab.

Mail-in labs across Canada have improved a lot. Studio Argentique ships negatives back via Canada Post with a tracking number and sends scans by WeTransfer straight to your email. NG Art Labs positions itself as a Canadian mail-in lab focused specifically on 35mm. Typical turnaround runs somewhere between one and three weeks, depending on the lab, their current workload, and the process involved.

Mass-market vs. specialty lab: the gap is bigger than you think

This is the most underestimated point for anyone starting out. Some pharmacies, department stores, and Walmart photo counters can still process C-41 in certain locations. The chemistry itself is often fine, because C-41 is highly standardized and the automated machines handle it well. The problem, almost without exception, is the scanning.

A mass-market lab will scan your negatives at low resolution. Gosselin Photo lists scanning at 300 dpi for negatives and slides, delivered as JPEGs with automatic image enhancement. At that resolution, the file is barely adequate for viewing on a phone screen. The JPEG will be compressed, auto-corrected, and will give you almost no room to work in post.

Specialty labs offer different tiers. At Studio Argentique, a standard JPEG scan for 35mm runs around 3200 x 2100 px for $5, while the XL scan gets you roughly 7000 x 4500 px as a TIFF for $50. That's not a minor difference: the XL scan gives you room to print large and recover detail that simply isn't in the base scan.

Understanding your scanning options: what labs are actually offering

When a lab describes its scan formats, three things deserve your attention: file format, resolution, and color correction.

JPEG or TIFF?

JPEG is compressed. Every time you open and re-save a JPEG, you lose a little quality. For sharing on social media or viewing on screen, JPEG is fine. For archiving and serious post-processing work, TIFF is the better choice. It holds all the information without lossy compression.

In practice: if you want to get your files and leave them alone, JPEG is enough. If you plan to do any serious editing, print fine art, or archive long-term, get the TIFF. The price gap between the two is often significant, so it's worth deciding consciously before you order.

Resolution, in practice

Labs usually express resolution in dpi or total pixel dimensions. What actually matters is the pixel count in the final file. A 300 dpi scan of a 35mm negative produces a file too small to do much with. A 3200 x 2100 px scan is workable. A 7000 x 4500 px scan gives you real room to crop, correct, and print.

For medium format (120), the larger negative size means the same optical dpi produces more pixels. But not every lab gives 120 the same level of attention they give 35mm, so it's worth asking specifically.

Auto-corrected or raw output

This is probably the least-asked question, and yet it's the most important one if you have a clear idea of the look you're after.

Most labs apply automatic corrections to color scans: white balance, overall exposure, sometimes a bit of noise reduction. The result is "clean" and often perfectly satisfying for a vacation shot. But if you chose a particular film stock for a reason, whether that's the warm cast of a Kodak Gold, the muted palette of a pushed Kodak Ultramax, or the deep blacks of HP5 shot at 1600 ISO, that correction can erase exactly what you were looking for.

Turnaround times: reading between the lines

A lab that advertises "typical one-week turnaround" can in practice take two or three weeks depending on the season. Summer and the September-October stretch tend to be the busiest. If you need your scans by a specific date, ask the lab before you ship.

Mail-in labs generally take longer than the distance alone would imply: you're stacking the outbound transit time, processing time, and return shipping. Studio Argentique lists an average of 1 to 3 weeks for certain processes, noting that some are longer and more hands-on. Some labs offer rush service for an extra fee.

For black and white, some specialty labs handle the chemistry in-house, which may lengthen the turnaround but usually produces more carefully controlled results. Others send B&W out to a partner lab, which adds a step in the chain. Worth asking about.

When it's worth paying more

A base JPEG scan is often cheap, sometimes bundled with the development price. A professional XL TIFF can cost several times that. Is it worth it?

Depends on what you're doing with it. If you're shooting to share on Instagram, the standard scan is fine. But if you've spent three months on a personal project, shot on a film stock that cost you $20 a roll, and you want 8x10 prints, the answer is obviously yes.

There's also the specific case of black and white processing. A lab that really knows its B&W chemistry, meaning they're calibrating developer choice and development times to the film stock and your exposure index, will give you denser, better-structured negatives that scan more easily and hold more shadow and highlight detail. C-41 is standardized enough that it's hard to mess up, but black and white leaves much more room for expertise (or the lack of it).

What to ask before you send a roll

A practical list of questions to ask, or points to verify on the lab's website:

  1. Scan formats offered: JPEG, TIFF, pixel dimensions. Are the numbers stated clearly?
  2. Auto-correction or not: is there a neutral scan option?
  3. B&W processed in-house or outsourced: relevant if you're sending black and white.
  4. Actual turnaround, not best-case: ask whether there's a backlog at the time you're sending.
  5. Negative return: do you get your film back? Some labs only return scans. Others send back negatives, a contact sheet, and digital files.
  6. What happens if something goes wrong: what does the lab offer if a roll is lost or damaged?

Scanning your own negatives: if you're starting to accumulate rolls and the scanning bills are adding up, it's worth considering a flatbed with a film adapter (the Epson Perfection V600 is the standard reference point) or looking into DSLR/mirrorless scanning with a macro lens. The math on return on investment works out fairly quickly once you compare it to what you're spending on lab scans over time.
