Stand Development: Set Your Tank on the Counter, Wait an Hour, Get Negatives You Can't Get Any Other Way
Some techniques you stumble onto by accident, usually while trying to solve a specific problem. A negative that's too contrasty, a concert shot that's half a stop underexposed, a drawer full of mismatched film stocks you want to clear out in a single session. Stand development handles all of that at once, and with a simplicity that can feel almost suspicious.
The idea: you pour a heavily diluted developer into your tank, invert for thirty seconds to dislodge any air bubbles, and set the tank on the counter. You come back an hour later. That's more or less it.
What's happening in the tank while you wait
The mechanism that makes this worthwhile is what's called the compensating effect, and it follows directly from the absence of agitation.
In a conventional development routine with regular inversions, fresh developer is constantly being brought into contact with the emulsion, uniformly across the whole frame. The heavily exposed areas (the highlights in your scene, which correspond to the dense areas of the negative) keep building density as long as the developer stays active. That's what can produce hard, difficult-to-print negatives when the film or the scene was already contrasty to begin with.
Without agitation, the developer held within the gelatin exhausts itself faster in the heavily exposed zones. It depletes locally around the highlights, while the shadows, which need less reducing agent to develop, keep working toward full density. In practical terms, the exhausted developer sitting around the dense areas of the negative acts as a natural brake, while the still-active developer in the lightly exposed areas does its job undisturbed.
In practice, the developer is working mainly on the highlights during roughly the first fifteen minutes. After that, it has all the time it needs to bring out detail in the midtones and tease out subtle texture in the deepest shadows.
That's why it's called a compensating developer: it compresses the tonal range dynamically, without any intervention on your part.
Rodinal: the go-to developer for stand work
Rodinal is almost impossible to avoid when the subject of stand development comes up. Patented in 1891, originally made by Agfa, it's still produced in Europe by Adox under the name R09, and also sold as Adonal, Fomadon R09, and Blazinal in Canada.
What it brings to this particular process is its ability to stay active at extreme dilutions over a long development window. At 1+100 for stand development, any additional agitation after the first minute will destroy the compensating effect. The tank needs to stay completely still for the full duration.
Basic protocol: Rodinal 1+100
For a standard 35mm tank (around 300 ml / roughly 10 oz):
- 3 ml of concentrated Rodinal to 297 ml of water at 20°C (68°F)
- Pre-soak recommended: water at 20°C for 2 to 5 minutes, drain before pouring the developer
- Vigorous agitation for the first 30 to 60 seconds
- Complete stand for 60 minutes
- Stop bath (water or diluted acetic acid), fix, and wash as usual
1+150 and beyond
Stand development typically calls for high dilutions of Rodinal: 1+100 for one hour, or 1+200 for two hours. The 1+150 dilution is a reasonable middle ground for pushed films or naturally fine-grained emulsions. You get a bit more gradation in tonal transitions, though you'll need around 90 minutes. The 1+200 at two hours is perfectly viable but it does ask more of your water quality, and the film needs to tolerate extended development times well.
For pushed film, 1+100 at 1 hour 30 minutes will typically get you one stop of push, and two hours for two stops. Those are starting points, not gospel.

Semi-stand: the sensible version
Pure stand development has one well-known weakness: bromide drag. These are streaks caused by bromide, a natural byproduct of development, that accumulates and locally inhibits development when there's no agitation to carry it away. In 35mm, they tend to show up near the sprocket holes.
For a first attempt, semi-stand is the smarter approach: a single agitation midway through, with a dilution between 1+50 and 1+100, which takes care of the bromide drag problem. In practice, 3 to 4 very gentle inversions at the 30-minute mark during a one-hour development is plenty. That's enough to redistribute the developer and eliminate virtually all streaking without disrupting the compensating effect.
In medium format, bromide drag is even more obvious than in 35mm because the film surface is larger and the developer has more ground to cover. Semi-stand is often the safer starting point there.
HC-110 and Caffenol: other options worth knowing
Rodinal isn't the only developer that works here. HC-110, Caffenol, Pyrocat, Ilfosol 3, and DD-X all have documented track records with stand development. Kodak HC-110 and Ilford LC29 both give excellent results.
HC-110 is particularly interesting for semi-stand work: it produces less bromide drag than Rodinal in a pure stand, which makes it a more forgiving choice when you're still dialing in the process. The compensating effect generally comes from heavily diluting a concentrated developer like Rodinal, HC-110, or Pyrocat HD while limiting agitation.
For HC-110, dilutions G (1+119) or H (1+63) are commonly used in semi-stand, with times ranging from 45 to 75 minutes depending on dilution and emulsion. Check Massive Dev Chart for your specific film stock, since the variation from one emulsion to another is real and worth accounting for.
Caffenol, the homemade developer built from instant coffee, washing soda, and vitamin C, also lends itself naturally to stand development. The Caffenol-C-L stand protocol calls for a 5-minute pre-soak, 10 gentle initial inversions, then complete standstill for 60 minutes at 22°C (72°F), with a clear, fog-free base as a reliable result. Caffenol is a compensating developer by nature, so pairing it with stand development makes a lot of sense.
Where stand development actually makes a difference
High-contrast scenes
This is the most obvious use case. Harsh backlight, an interior lit by a single window, a sunlit portrait with deep shadows: these are situations where standard agitated development usually forces a compromise between blown highlights and blocked-up shadows. Stand development compresses that dynamic range naturally, without reaching for Zone System adjustments or N-1 processing.
Pushed film
Stand development is remarkably tolerant of exposure variation and makes it possible to develop films shot at widely different speeds. A film exposed at 1600 ISO on a 400 ISO base can give genuinely usable results with a well-calibrated stand protocol. The shadows, which would often be gone in a conventional push, come back with printable texture.
Mixed film stocks
Stand development lets you develop frames shot at different speeds, whether on the same roll or across different rolls in the same tank. If you've got a roll of Foma 100 and a roll of HP5 pushed to 800, you can process them together with a Rodinal 1+100 / 60-minute protocol. Neither roll will be perfectly optimized, but both will be usable, which is often the best realistic outcome in that kind of situation.
Expired film
Stand development is a common recommendation for expired stock because it's gentle and predictable: the compensating effect keeps highlights from running away, and the extended time gives slower-responding areas of the emulsion a chance to come up. It's not a cure-all, but it tends to play to expired film's remaining strengths.
What stand development won't do
It won't rescue a badly underexposed negative. A film that's two or three stops under will still be underexposed. The shadows will be somewhat better than with a standard development, but don't expect miracles.
Grain is often more pronounced than with a normal-dilution developer, particularly with Rodinal. That's partly a characteristic of Rodinal in general, and the extended development time doesn't help. If grain is a concern on HP5 or Tri-X, stand development probably isn't your best bet. A finer-working developer in a semi-stand protocol with HC-110 will serve you better.
Repeatability also takes a bit of work to dial in. There are a lot of variables: water hardness, ambient temperature, pre-soak quality, the film itself. The first roll is rarely perfect. Starting with a film stock you already know well is the best way to isolate what the new protocol is actually doing.
A practical starting protocol
For a first serious attempt, this combination holds up well across a wide range of situations:
- Film: HP5 Plus or FP4 Plus (forgiving emulsions, well-documented behavior)
- Developer: Rodinal or R09 One Shot at 1+100, water at 20°C (68°F)
- Volume: calculate for your tank size, minimum 5 ml of concentrate per roll
- Pre-soak: water at 20°C, 3 to 5 minutes, drain
- Pour developer, agitate for 45 seconds, tap the tank to dislodge bubbles
- Set the tank on a stable surface, away from vibration
- At 30 minutes: 3 very gentle inversions (semi-stand)
- At 60 minutes: stop bath, fix, wash as normal
Going further
Rodinal / R09 One Shot (Adox): The reference developer for this process. Available in 100 ml, 500 ml, and 1-litre bottles. Its shelf life once opened is exceptional, even when the bottle is mostly empty. It's one of the few developers genuinely worth keeping in the cabinet at all times.
