Your First Darkroom Prints: Setting Up a B&W Lab Without Breaking the Bank
There's something about standing in a dark room, watching an image slowly materialize in a tray of developer, that you simply can't explain to someone who hasn't been there. That's the moment when silver printing stops being an abstraction and becomes something real. This guide is here to help you cross that threshold practically, without getting lost in theory or spending a fortune.
Finding a workspace
The question I hear most often: do I need an actual dedicated darkroom? In practice, no. Plenty of photographers made their first prints in a bathroom, and some never left. What you need is a room you can get completely dark.
The bathroom has a few things going for it: running water for washing, surfaces that are easy to clean, and usually enough ventilation to handle chemical fumes. A basement, when you have one, is often even better: more space, easier to seal up, more stable temperature. Testing for light leaks is simple enough. Go in, close everything, and wait a few minutes for your eyes to adjust. Any light creeping under a door or around a window gets blocked with an old blanket or some gaffer tape.
The workspace naturally splits into two zones: dry side (enlarger, negative carriers, filters) and wet side (chemical trays, wash). Keeping them separate is a good habit to build from day one. A wet print landing on your enlarger lens happens faster than you'd think.
The enlarger: your main purchase
This is the central investment, and it's where the used market becomes your best friend. Enlargers from the 1970s through the 1990s are solid machines, often still in perfectly good working order, and they're cheap because most home darkrooms shut down in the 2000s and the gear has been sitting in basements and garages ever since.
Three brands come up constantly on classifieds sites:
- Durst (M600, M605, M707): Italian-made, built to last, parts and lenses still easy to track down. Very common, often sold complete with lens and easel.
- Meopta (Opemus 5, Opemus 6): Czech-made, excellent reputation, serious construction. Slightly less common but just as reliable.
- LPL: Japanese brand, more modern design, generally appreciated for ease of use. Good stock optics.
For 35mm work, any of these will serve you well. If you're shooting or thinking of shooting medium format (6x6, 6x7), check that the negative carrier supports that format before you commit. RC or fiber-base paper?
Your choice of paper affects everything: processing time, print longevity, and final look.
RC paper (resin-coated) has a polyethylene coating on both sides. It processes quickly, dries flat without curling, and forgives beginner inconsistencies fairly well. A properly washed RC print is ready in about twenty minutes, drying included. It's the paper you use while learning, for test strips, for working through a roll. The trade-off is that it doesn't last as long as well-processed fiber-base, and it has a slightly plasticky look that an experienced eye will notice.
Fiber-base paper (FB) has a cotton-base coated with barium sulfate before the emulsion layer. It's closer to the traditional materials from the classic era of the wet darkroom. The rendition is richer, the blacks deeper, and the archival quality is in a completely different league from RC, as long as you respect the fixing and washing times. That said, it requires several hours of running-water washing and needs to dry flat under weight to avoid curling. For your first sessions, fiber-base is a distraction, not a priority.
Chemistry: developer, stop bath, fixer
Printing runs through three consecutive baths in three separate trays. With RC paper, the times are short and there's a reasonable margin for error.
Paper developer: Ilford Multigrade Developer is a natural match if you're using Ilford paper, but Kodak Dektol (or its equivalent, Ilford PQ Universal) works just as well. Ilford's technical data calls for a 1+9 dilution (one part concentrate to nine parts water) and a development time of around 1 minute at 20°C (68°F). In practice you can push to 1 minute 30 seconds for more complete development, but beyond that you start seeing fog build up. Temperature matters: a developer that's too cold slows things down in unpredictable ways, too hot and the paper runs away from you. Around 20°C is the sweet spot.
Stop bath: a diluted acetic acid solution (indicator stop bath, roughly 1+19) that halts developer action immediately and protects your fixer. Twenty to thirty seconds is all you need. Some people use plain water, but an acid stop is more reliable and extends the life of your fixer considerably.
Fixer: Ilford Rapid Fixer, diluted 1+4 for paper, 1 to 2 minutes for RC. This is the bath that makes the image light-stable. A print that isn't fixed long enough will yellow over time. Don't rush it.
After the fixer, a running-water wash of 5 to 10 minutes for RC, then dry. It's straightforward, it's repetitive, and you'll find your rhythm pretty quickly.
Understanding multigrade filters
Most modern variable-contrast papers, including Ilford Multigrade, respond to two different wavelengths of light. Green light lowers contrast (softer grades, gentler highlights), magenta increases it (higher grades, deeper blacks and harder highlight rolloff).
Multigrade filters, slipped under the lens or into a filter drawer on the enlarger head, let you dial in contrast without changing paper. Grades typically run from 00 (very soft) to 5 (very hard). A well-exposed, normally developed negative will usually print well at grade 2 or 2.5 without any fuss. A flat, low-contrast negative might need grade 3 or 4. A dense negative with difficult highlights will often print better at 1 or 1.5.
The test strip: the core of the process
Before making a full print, you always run a test strip on a small piece of paper (about 5cm / 2 inches wide) cut from a sheet. The idea is simple: you expose successive zones for fixed intervals, typically 5 seconds each, progressively covering the strip with a piece of cardboard. You end up with a range of exposures from the same negative on one piece of paper.
After developing and a quick fix, you examine the strip under normal light. You're looking for the zone that gives the best balance between blacks and highlights, not too grey, not blown out. That exposure becomes your starting point for the full print.
