Harman Switch Azure 125: the black-and-white company that just made color do a backflip

Harman Technology has just launched its fourth color film stock. And not a conventional color film, let's be clear from the start: the Switch Azure 125 is a film where the colors are literally inverted. Skies go orange, beaches turn azure, skin takes on bluish tones. For a company whose identity has been built on black-and-white for over a century, that's a pretty bold statement.

A bit of context first: Harman and color is a very recent thing

Harman Technology is the Mobberley factory, in Cheshire, England, that produces everything we buy under the ILFORD name: HP5 Plus, FP4 Plus, Delta 100, Delta 3200, the fiber and RC papers, the chemistry. A serious manufacturing operation, but one that had never actually produced a color film until late 2023.

That's when Phoenix 200 arrived, in December 2023, and it genuinely shook the community. A color emulsion made at Mobberley, from scratch, in a factory with no modern color history. The result was imperfect and unapologetically so, grainy, with expressive colors that looked like nothing else on the market. The community embraced it enthusiastically, precisely because it was raw and new.

Since then, Harman followed up with Phoenix II (a refined version with a new emulsion), then the Harman Red 125, a redscaled version of the same base film. Switch Azure 125 is officially the brand's fourth color film stock, and the one that pushes the experimentation furthest.

What it actually does

Switch Azure doesn't tint or filter colors after the fact. What's happening is more fundamental: two of the three color couplers (the agents that form the dyes in the emulsion during C-41 development) have been swapped. The blue channel records red light, the red channel records blue light, and the green channel stays put. The result is that familiar colors shift toward their complements, or toward something even more unexpected depending on the light.

Blues become orange. Bright yellows slide into a saturated azure. Reds transform into blue-violet shades. Green vegetation stays fairly recognizable since the green channel is untouched, but it often picks up a warmer cast than you'd expect.

This kind of coupler manipulation can't be done at home, and it's not artisanal redscaling either. It's emulsion chemistry, done at the factory. That's what separates Switch Azure from a scan inversion or a Lightroom preset that swaps channels after the fact.

ISO 125 in a market full of 200 and 400

The vast majority of current color film stocks sit at ISO 200 or 400. Kodak Gold 200, UltraMax 400, ColorPlus 200 from Kodak. Fuji 200, Superia 400 from Fujifilm. Even Harman's own Phoenix is at 200.

Switch Azure goes with 125. That's a bright-light ISO, suited to outdoor shooting and well-lit windows. Indoors, you're looking at a tripod or accepting a push, which Harman explicitly advises against for their experimental color films. The latitude is tighter than a faster film, and highlights can clip with some fairly pronounced blue halation, something several early testers have already flagged.

Why 125 then? Probably because the base emulsion (derived from the Phoenix) simply performs better at this speed with the inverted couplers. It doesn't feel like a marketing choice to stand out; it's almost certainly a formulation constraint. At 125, the film delivers. Push it and the results get even more unpredictable, and not always in a good way.

Compared to Phoenix 200: same family, completely different world

The two films share the same base emulsion, or something close to it. But the visual result is radically different.

Phoenix 200 gives you colors that could be described as shifted but still readable. The tones are warm, a bit washed out in the shadows, with fairly heavy grain. You can still recognize what you photographed. It's a film that feels like a slightly overexposed slide shot underwater, with a grain texture that recalls emulsions from the 1980s.

Switch Azure flips the entire reference frame. A blue sky goes orange. An orange sunset can turn turquoise. This isn't a film that subtly distorts, it's one that tells a parallel version of reality. For anyone who wants to control the final look, that's intimidating. For anyone chasing visual surprise, it's fascinating.

Phoenix works across a lot of subjects if you accept its quirks. Switch Azure asks for subjects chosen with it in mind: scenes with solid, distinct color masses, architecture, landscapes where the sky's color is central to the frame. It doesn't tolerate accidental chaos well, but it rewards deliberate exploration.

What the community is saying

The early reactions, visible on analog.cafe and elsewhere, are divided in the best possible sense: there are convinced enthusiasts and more pragmatic photographers who find it too constraining for regular use. Both positions are entirely reasonable.

What keeps coming up: highlight halation can be very pronounced, especially around direct light sources. And ambient light makes predictions difficult. Under tungsten, the results look nothing like midday sun, which isn't bad news for photographers who like to explore, but it can get frustrating if you're trying to replicate something specific you saw on Instagram.

The comparison with Lomography's Lomochrome Turquoise is inevitable. Both films work through channel inversion, both develop in C-41, both are designed for radical creative effects. The main differences come down to manufacturing origin (Harman's own factory versus an emulsion redeveloped by Lomography), availability, and price. Switch Azure retails through most major film stockists at around $12–13 USD per 35mm roll.

Can you trust Harman to make color film?

It's a fair question and worth asking honestly. Harman has over 140 years of history, world-class infrastructure for black-and-white, and a reliability record that speaks for itself. But color chemistry is a different discipline. The tolerances are tighter, the interlayer interactions more complex, and ILFORD's history with color is very short.

Phoenix 200 showed they could make a color film stock that's consistent roll to roll, even if early versions had highlight control issues. Phoenix II confirmed they learn fast and refine their formulations. Switch Azure is deliberately experimental, so the usual benchmarks don't quite apply.

This isn't a film to reach for when you want faithful colors. It's a film for projects where unpredictability is part of the creative brief.

Going further

Switch Azure is available in 35mm (36 exposures) and 120, which is good news for medium format shooters. In 120, grain is less visible over larger frame areas and the color effects have more room to breathe.

If you want to compare results between an LED scanner and a CCD scanner, this is clearly a film that justifies running it through two different setups before settling on a method.
