Leica Monopan 50: Does That Red Dot Actually Justify the Price?

The red dot on the cartridge is a nice touch. But at $10 US a roll for an ISO 50 film stock, the question deserves a straight answer: is the Leica Monopan 50 genuinely exceptional, or is it a decent film wearing a premium badge? The truth is somewhere between the two, and it's worth more than a quick look.

What Leica claims, and what it means in practice

Leica announced the Monopan 50 on June 18, 2025 in Wetzlar, to mark the centenary of the Leica I. It became available worldwide on August 21, 2025, and it's officially the first 35mm black-and-white film stock launched under the Leica name.

The specs are serious: resolution up to 280 line pairs per millimeter, super-panchromatic sensitivity extending to 780 nm, ultra-fine grain, and a wide tonal range. The name itself is a compressed statement of intent: "Mono" references the Monochrom camera line, "pan" the extended panchromatic response, and "50" the ISO rating.

In practical terms, 280 lp/mm is substantial. That figure exceeds what you get from Tri-X, HP5+, or even the well-regarded Acros 100 II. If you're shooting large format or scanning for maximum detail, a film with that kind of resolving power makes a visible difference. The sensitivity extending to 780 nm means the film responds more strongly to deep reds and behaves differently under red or orange filtration. It's also well-suited to infrared work and pairs naturally with Leica's color filter lineup.

The uncomfortable question: Adox HR-50 in a different box?

Since the film came out, this question has been making the rounds on every forum: is the Monopan 50 just Adox HR-50 rebadged?

Honest answer: nobody knows for certain. The spectral sensitivity curves of the two films are nearly identical when overlaid, the rated resolution is the same, and the reciprocity figures line up. Adox HR-50 is made by Adox Fotowerke in Germany and sells for around $7.50 a roll. Leica hasn't publicly disclosed the source of the emulsion.

Test shots suggest the Monopan 50 rolls off the highlights slightly faster than the Adox HR-50 under identical conditions, which could point to different processing, or just batch-to-batch variation. One tester described it as a high-contrast film with abrupt transitions into the highlights. On the ground, though, the difference is subtle.

The ISO 50-and-under territory isn't empty. It's worth knowing where the Monopan 50 actually sits.

Ilford Pan F Plus 50 is the most accessible and best-documented slow film on the market. Fine grain, high resolution, and it develops happily in just about any common developer: D-76, ID-11, Rodinal (1+50), HC-110, Ilfosol. It's the forgiving choice for anyone wanting to explore slow film without overcomplicating things. Street price runs about $8 to $9 US depending on the retailer. The question isn't whether Pan F Plus is good, it is, but whether it shares the Monopan 50's signature. The Monopan 50's spectral sensitivity curve closely mirrors the Adox HR-50's response, which sets it apart from the Pan F Plus.

Adox CMS 20 II plays in an even more extreme space. The HR-50 is roughly 1 to 1.5 stops faster than the CMS 20, but both require a dedicated developer to hit their rated speed. The CMS 20 II developed in Adotech produces results that are genuinely stunning in terms of micro-detail, but exposure latitude is nearly nonexistent. It's a film for photographers who want to push the absolute limits of 35mm resolution under controlled conditions: stable light, tripod, calculated exposures. Comparing it directly to the Monopan 50 is comparing two different tools.

Rollei ATP 1.1 sits in similar high-contrast, ultra-fine-grain territory, but it's an orthochromatic emulsion, which changes things fundamentally. It doesn't see red, which affects how skin tones, foliage, and skies are rendered. That's an advantage for certain reproduction work, but a real constraint for portraits or street shooting. The Monopan 50, with its extended panchromatic response, is a much more versatile film for general use.

Development: a real constraint, not a footnote

This is the part marketing materials tend to gloss over. D-76 and ID-11 diluted 1+1, which have been my go-to developers for decades, are not recommended for the Leica Monopan 50. That's a meaningful limitation for anyone who has standardized their workflow around these common developers. The datasheet lists Adox developers among the recommended options, which is, again, an interesting detail given the speculation about the emulsion's origins.

Tool or badge?

That's really the core question. At $10 US a roll, the Monopan 50 costs roughly 33% more than its probable Adox counterpart for very similar performance on paper. It's noticeably more expensive than Pan F Plus, less extreme than the CMS 20 II in terms of resolution and required technique, and more versatile than the Rollei ATP 1.1.

What the Monopan 50 genuinely delivers: real super-panchromatic sensitivity, excellent resolution, and strong compatibility with color filters for dramatic effects. It works well for urban landscapes, architecture, and portraits in good light where you want to shoot wide open. What it doesn't deliver is a clear technical break from what already exists.

The price premium is as much about the brand as the engineering. That's not necessarily a criticism; Leica has always worked that way, and people who buy Leica gear know it. But if you're looking for the most effective slow film per dollar spent, the Monopan 50 isn't the obvious answer. On the other hand, if you're shooting with a Leica body and want ecosystem consistency, or you're just curious what ISO 50 at 280 lp/mm looks like in your own practice, there's nothing here to disappoint you. It's a very good film, priced a bit high, for reasons that aren't entirely technical.

Going further

Starting with a box of Ilford Pan F Plus 50 makes sense, especially if you're developing at home with D-76 or ID-11. It's the film with the deepest documentation and the most latitude for learning the slow-film territory. Adox HR-50 (or HR-50 Pro) then deserves a direct side-by-side with the Monopan 50 under the same conditions and in the same developer. Any real difference will show up on a densitometer more readily than to the naked eye. For anyone wanting to push resolution limits under controlled conditions, Adox CMS 20 II with Adotech IV is a thing unto itself, but with a learning curve that shouldn't be underestimated.
