The Enlarging Lens: The Part Everyone Overlooks, and the One That Makes All the Difference
You spend hours picking an enlarger, checking the head, the baseboard flatness, the column rigidity. And then for the lens, you grab whatever was rattling around in a box, or pick up the cheapest one available on eBay. It's a classic mistake, and it shows up in every disappointing print you make.
A mediocre enlarging lens doesn't always fail you at the center. It falls apart at the edges, where sharpness collapses, contrast goes soft, and sometimes there's a diffusion veil that leaves everything slightly blurry without any obvious explanation. Put a print made with a budget optic next to one made with a Rodagon or a Componon-S, and the difference is often stark.
Why the lens matters as much as the enlarger
An enlarger projects an image through a lens designed specifically to work at close distances, high magnification, and with a flat field. Those constraints have almost nothing in common with a taking lens optimized for infinity focus.
You can adapt a camera lens to an enlarger and it'll work after a fashion, but it wasn't computed for that task. Field aberrations and field curvature that are tolerable or even invisible in normal shooting become real problems when you're magnifying a negative at high ratios. Which focal length for which format?
This is the most practical question and the one that causes the most confusion. The rule is straightforward: the focal length should cover slightly more than the diagonal of the negative.
For 35mm (24x36mm), with a diagonal of roughly 43mm, the standard lens is a 50mm. It's widely available and gives a good magnification range on most enlarger columns.
Standard magnifications of 8x have been established for 50mm lenses, and 5x for 75mm and 80mm lenses. For 6x6cm format, with a diagonal around 80mm, you move up to a 75mm or 80mm. For 6x7cm, a 90mm or 100mm is typical, and for 4x5, the reference is 135mm or 150mm.
A lens that's too short for the format won't cover the corners properly and will produce vignetting or a noticeable resolution drop at the edges. A lens that's too long isn't a problem for coverage, but it forces the head up very high to get large prints, which can become a real limitation on shorter columns.

Evaluating a secondhand lens: what to check
The used market is where most people find these lenses, which is fine because prices on common models are generally reasonable. A few things are worth looking at before you buy.
Glass condition. Hold the lens up in transmission against a bright light, then check it in reflection under a flashlight. You're looking for fungus (threads or white spots between elements), interior haze (a frozen fogging on the glass), and deep scratches on the front or rear elements. "Haze", that slight opalescence from chemical deposits between elements, is often invisible in listing photos but obvious under direct inspection. On prints, it shows up as a flat, low-contrast look and a general veiling.
The mount. Nearly all common El-Nikkor lenses use the M39 mount (39mm thread diameter), except the 135mm and 150mm versions, which sometimes came with an adapter stepping a larger mount down to M39. M39 is the most common standard for enlarging lenses, but always confirm compatibility with your lens board before buying.
Signs of impact. A lens that's been dropped can have decentered elements with no visible damage to the outside. If the listing mentions a fall, or the mount shows impact marks, be cautious.
